From the "master of suburban scandal" (Samantha M. Bailey) comes a scandalous, twisty thriller about obsession, betrayal, and the price of perfection
Just outside Washington, DC, sits Eastbrook, Bethesda—a leafy suburb with top schools, pristine landscapes, and perfect neighbors. It’s not the kind of place where nannies are shot during robberies gone wrong. And in this picture-perfect neighborhood, someone is desperate to plaster over the cracks in that façade.
A year after the unsolved neighborhood murder, Caren, nearing fifty and staring down an empty nest, has one too many drinks at a graduation party and blacks out on her way home. At least, that’s what everyone says happened. Caren suspects she was drugged by someone. But who?
When Caren teams up with a new neighbor who is desperate to figure out who murdered his best friend last year, they start to uncover what Eastbrook has tried to forget. But in a place where appearances are everything, their search for the truth means not only shattering carefully curated perfection — but putting themselves squarely in the crosshairs of a killer.

My Review
"A Masterclass in Suburban Paranoia!"
Aggie Blum Thompson delivers an absolute masterclass in domestic suspense with The Neighbors Are Watching. Set against a backdrop of a seemingly picture-perfect, wealthy neighborhood, the novel masterfully peels back layers of affluent facades to reveal the dark, dangerous secrets hiding right behind the pristine lawns and ring cameras.
Mood
The story centers on high-stakes neighborhood tension, an atmosphere thick with paranoia, and a community where everyone is watching but nobody is telling the truth.
"A razor-sharp thriller where a grieving friend and a drugged survivor uncover the dark rot hiding behind manicured lawns."
In THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING, bestselling author Aggie Blum Thompson (a favorite) is back with her scandalous domestic secrets with a deeply atmospheric, Washington D.C. suburban, contemporary thriller mystery. The story hinges on an empty-nester teaming up with an obsessive new neighbor to shatter a wealthy community's perfect façade.
Blacked-out witness vs. small-town secrets.
Elevator Pitch
A year after a neighborhood nanny is mysteriously murdered, a woman suspects she was secretly drugged at a graduation party, and teams up with the victim's grieving best friend to expose a pristine suburb's deadly lies.
Setting
Present: The story unfolds in Eastbrook, a highly affluent, picture-perfect suburban neighborhood in Bethesda, Maryland. Manicured lawns, pristine landscapes, top-tier schools, and a suffocating culture of curated perfection physically define the neighborhood.
Vibe
Tense, paranoid, and scandalous. It blends the deceptive veneer of wealthy suburban bliss with the slow-burning dread of a neighborhood watch in which everyone is observing but no one is telling the truth.
Genre:
Suburban Thriller / Mystery Suspense / Contemporary Fiction.
Themes
~The Cost of Perfection
~Perception vs. Memory
~Suburban Corruption
~Privilege and Complicity
~Unlikely Alliances
~Betrayal & Diversity
CAREN & FINN: THE UNLIKELY DETECTIVES
Turning a fractured memory and heavy grief into an investigative superpower.
Standout Characters
~Caren: The protagonist, a woman nearing fifty, facing an empty nest, who refuses to let her neighborhood convince her that her blackout was just too much to drink.
~Finn: The resilient, obsessive new neighbor desperate to uncover the truth about who targeted his murdered best friend.
Author Writing Standout
Thompson’s trademark background as a master of suburban scandal shines through in her meticulous, highly empathetic rendering of Caren's internal panic. Thompson's writing is incredibly sharp, and her ability to build a slow-burning sense of claustrophobia keeps the pages turning at a breakneck pace. The characters are complex, flawed, and deeply compelling, making the web of gossip and suspicion feel completely immersive.
Takeaway
True justice requires looking past pristine surface-level assumptions; the most dangerous monsters are often the perfect neighbors hiding right behind a veneer of ordinary respectability.
Title Significance
The Neighbors Are Watching acts as a double-edged warning. It represents the community's intense social surveillance and desire to protect its elite reputation, while simultaneously hinting that looking too closely into the past will put Caren and Finn squarely in a killer's sightline.
Metaphor
Caren’s blacked-out graduation party timeline serves as the central metaphor of the novel. It represents the entire suburb of Eastbrook itself—a foggy, deliberately obscured canvas of missing truths where the elite selectively choose what to remember and what to bury forever.
Why You Should Read
For readers who crave the intense "who can I trust?" psychological dread found in thrillers by the author, or like B.A. Paris’s The Therapist, this book is an absolute must-read. Thompson perfectly captures the elite neighborhood thriller subgenre, proving once again that the most terrifying secrets are the ones hidden in plain sight right next door. A highly recommended, addictive five-star read.
My Thoughts
The novel succeeds beautifully in building domestic tension. The suburban setting is perfectly captured—not just through aesthetics, but through the heavy social anxieties of empty-nest aging and the toxic weight of neighborhood gossip. Caren is an unforgettable lead; her vulnerability, wit, and stubbornness make her incredibly grounded. A masterfully executed, high-stakes climax.
Verdict 5/5 Stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"A gripping, atmospheric suburban thriller that pairs a highly unique investigative duo with a genuinely chilling small-town conspiracy."

"Thompson is a master at sneaking us behind closed doors into the dark and devious world of rich suburbanites...The Neighbors Are Watching is her best work yet. Good fences aren’t enough to make good neighbors in this entitled world, but you’ll relish every second wondering who will get their just deserts. An exceptional thriller from a major talent."
―Alex Finlay, bestselling author of Parents Weekend

About the Author

Before turning to fiction, Aggie worked as a newspaper reporter, covering cops, courts, and trials, with a healthy dose of the mundane mixed in. Her writing has appeared in newspapers such as The Boston Globe and The Washington Post. She lives in the suburbs just over the Washington D.C. line with her husband, two children, cat, and dog.
Her four domestic thrillers — I DON’T FORGIVE YOU, ALL THE DIRTY SECRETS, SUCH A LOVELY FAMILY, and YOU DESERVE TO KNOW — are all set in the Washington DC area. Hollywood has scooped up the option rights to all four novels.
