My Rating: 4 Stars(ARC)
From blockbusting, acclaimed writer LJ Ross comes a gripping, escapist thriller about a woman who survives a notorious killer—only to discover that some threats aren’t left behind.
Perfect for fans of Kaira Rouda and Sally Hepworth, THE COVE is a tense, atmospheric page-turner where starting over might be the most dangerous choice of all...
Gabrielle Adams has it all—brains, beauty, a handsome fiancé, and a dream job in publishing. Until, one day, everything changes.
"The Tube Killer" takes his victims when they least expect it: standing on the edge of a busy London Underground platform, as they wait for a train to arrive through the murky underground tunnels of London.
Gabrielle soon learns that being a survivor is harder than being a victim, and she struggles to return to her old life. Desperate to break free from the endless nightmares, she snatches up an opportunity to run a tiny bookshop in a picturesque cove in rural Cornwall.
She thinks she’s found the perfect escape, but has she swapped one nightmare for another?
Suspense and mystery are peppered with romance and humor in this fast-paced thriller, set amidst the spectacular Cornish landscape.

My Review
"Coastal Cozy meets High-Stakes Thriller." It’s sun-drenched but carries an "ominous" seaside chill.
"LJ Ross kicks off her new Summer Suspense series with The Cove, a breezy, 'vacation-noir' mystery where the postcard-perfect coastal setting hides a much darker reality. When a peaceful escape turns into a hunt for a killer, the salt-aired atmosphere becomes as chilling as the plot twists. It’s a fast-paced, escapist read for fans of Ruth Ware or Lucy Foley who want their beach reads served with a side of murder."
"An Entertaining Summer Binge-Read"
Highlights...
THE COVE (Summer Suspense Mysteries #1) by LJ Ross
~Intro:
After surviving the "Underground Killer" in London, Gabrielle Adams flees to a picturesque Cornish cove to run a tiny bookshop. But when she witnesses what she believes is a crime on a stormy cliffside, she realizes her "perfect escape" might be another nightmare.
~Highlights/Characters:
Gabrielle (Gabi) is a vulnerable but determined protagonist. The bookshop and cafe setting in the cove is an absolute highlight for any book lover.
~Mood:
Atmospheric, coastal, and perfectly "summery." A breezy, "vacation with a side of murder" suspense. Perfect for a beach bag.
~Vibe:
"Coastal Chills & Sun-Drenched Suspense." It feels like a high-end vacation with a dark secret lurking in the water.
~Themes:
Isolation, the deceptive nature of "peaceful" places; survival.
~Highlights:
The setting is the star. Ross is the queen of making you feel like you're standing in the sea spray.
~Standout:
It’s the ultimate "escapist" mystery. It moves quickly and hits all the satisfying notes of a vacation-gone-wrong thriller.
~Setting:
Cornish Coastal, salt-aired, and deceptive. The location is as much a character as the investigator.
~Theme:
Escapism gone wrong. It’s about the darkness hiding behind a postcard-perfect summer.
~Small town:
The difficulty of being a survivor; isolation as both a sanctuary and a trap; trust in small-town communities.
~Author Writing Standout:
Atmospheric Setting. Ross is a master of the Cornish landscape, whisking you away to a coast where tranquil beauty gives way to raging storms in minutes.
~"Topography of Fear."
The rugged Cornish coastline functions as a physical manifestation of the protagonist's isolation and trauma. It turns a "popcorn" mystery into a study of Atmospheric Suspense.
~Takeaway:
You can change your location, but your past—and your nightmares—have a way of finding you. The most beautiful places often hide the darkest secrets.
~Recs:
A must for fans of the DCI Ryan series, Ruth Ware, or Lucy Foley’s "vacation thrillers," or anyone looking for a quick, "unputdownable" summer mystery.
My Thoughts:
An Atmospheric Escape!
~A fast-paced series starter. The kind of book you can finish in a single day, but it feels more like an escapist vacation than a deep character study. A reliable "beach read thriller."
It’s perfect for the season—engaging and fast, though perhaps a bit lighter on character development and soul than your 5-star literary picks. A fast-paced "palette cleanser." It moves quickly and hits all the satisfying notes of a summer thriller, with a dynamic setting, suspense, mystery, romance, humor, and a star lead.
Verdict: 4⭐Stars. A great "palette cleanser" between heavier literary fiction reads.
Special thanks to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for sharing an advanced reading copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
