The Devil Wears Prada meets The White Lotus in a story of colliding egos and shocking betrayal, as intoxicatingly ice cold as the pink prosecco that flows all weekend.
Everything needs to be just right for bestselling mystery writer Faye Wader’s first-ever fan weekend. Her sales might be slipping—only a little!—but her readers still love her enough to pony up for three days and two nights on Great Misery Island. The retreat is precisely planned, from the small-batch artisanal doughnuts to the perimenopausal Mermaid Meditation, by Faye and her beleaguered assistant, Jade—an aspiring author who can’t seem to finish her own novel.
Faye’s longtime agent and editor will be there, as well as Faye’s number one fan, Peggy Mercer, who has been first in line at every one of Faye’s events. When news comes that the weekend will be crashed by glamorous, charismatic rival novelist Abby Schuss, Faye thinks things can’t get worse … until one of the attendees is found dead in her room, setting off an unexpectedly murderous chain of events that makes prepub anxiety seem like a day at the beach. How far is Faye willing to go to get exactly what she wants from her Author Weekend?
The Author Weekend is a thrilling and hilarious dive into the dark heart of envy, and a glorious exploration of a woman of a certain age desperate to survive the dog-eat-dog world of publishing and control her own narrative.

My Review
"Death on Great Misery Island: A Deep Dive into Laura Zigman’s Unhinged New Mystery"
In Laura Zigman's electrifying THE AUTHOR WEEKEND, insecure mystery author Faye Wader hosts a tense, high-end fan retreat on Massachusetts' Great Misery Island. From the arrival of rival author Abby Schuss, a surprise murder, and Faye’s chaotic attempt to keep the retreat going, resulting in a hilarious dark satire on publishing, jealousy, and obsession.
"A wickedly funny, claustrophobic satire that asks: If a superfan dies on a private island and no one posts about it, did it even happen? Zigman serves up a 'locked-room' mystery where the egos are more bloated than the bodies.
"Think Yellowface meets The White Lotus —but with more artisanal doughnuts. and higher professional stakes. "
Plot: Sharp, satirical, and surprisingly claustrophobic.
Characters: Deliciously messy and absolutely unhinged.
Vibe: Polished panic at its finest.
My thoughts..
"A satirical 'locked-room' mystery where the sharpest weapon is an author’s ego."
A razor-sharp, unhinged "luxury nightmare" that proves the most dangerous person on a remote island isn't a serial killer—it's a middle-aged novelist with a failing brand.
THE AUTHOR WEEKEND is a "darkly funny, satirical thriller". Being a publisher and in the media my entire career, I thoroughly enjoyed the snark, secrets, and twisted dark humor.
POVs: The story is told through four alternating first-person perspectives: Faye, Jade, Hal, and Merry. The weekend shifts from a promotional event to a real-life whodunit when one of the attendees is found dead in her room, possibly from poisoning.
As the body count rises, hidden truths emerge, including a "fatal inconsistency" in Faye's own background story discovered by her top fan.
The Setting, Great Misery Island, a real-world location off the coast of Massachusetts, is central to its locked room mystery feel, providing an isolated and increasingly eerie backdrop for the unfolding chaos. Accessible only by boat, the island creates a sense of being trapped, which ramps up the tension once the murders begin.
The Retreat Atmosphere: A high-end, "White Lotus"-style luxury retreat. Featuring curated amenities like artisanal doughnut stations (so funny), themed cocktails, and specific activity areas for "perimenopausal Mermaid Meditation".
Contrast: The contrast between the "luxe" island retreat—filled with expensive food and flowing pink prosecco—and the unhinged, creepy nature of the escalating crimes is a major stylistic element.
The tone and atmosphere are locked room, remote island, claustrophobic, cynical, and satirical.
The Vibe is darkly comic, balancing the grim reality of a murder investigation with the ridiculousness of a failed publicity stunt. Also unsettling with a lingering sense that Faye’s world is crumbling, making the reader feel as off-balance as she is.
Narrative Style is wry, the humor is clever, and often self-deprecating. Observationally sharp, the author is known for pinpointing the absurd details of modern life.
Multi-layered, with multiple perspectives, the story feels like a puzzle where every character is hiding something. Propulsive, once the mystery begins, the pace shifts from a character study into a fast-moving "whodunit."
Themes:
~Professional Insecurity & Envy
~The Cost of Rebranding
~The Power Dynamics of Fandom
~Betrayal & Loyalty
~Grief & Transition
"A sharp-edged look at what happens when an author's 'backstory' becomes a front for murder."
The book concludes with an "ironic" and dark ending that emphasizes that in the cutthroat world of publishing, deception is king—even if it's built on a foundation of lies and bodies. The ending adds a much darker layer to the book's core themes, moving it from simple satire into a "survival of the fittest" narrative.
It’s the perfect read if you enjoy darkly funny stories where the "villain" is actually just a very stressed, very insecure woman. The primary takeaway is a cynical but insightful look at the fragility of identity and the "myth of the brand".
Cynical and stylish, a luxury setting and dark industry secrets.
The Audiobook Vibe Check
"Think The White Lotus meets The Devil Wears Prada, but delivered straight into your ears with all the biting wit of a 10:00 AM marketing meeting gone wrong. The full-cast narration turns every industry slight and murderous twist into a cinematic experience that makes 'pre-pub anxiety' sound like a day at the beach." I loved the audio.
The Cast
Gabra Zackman: Known for her "snark with a dash of heat," Gabra is the perfect choice for the beleaguered assistant, Jade, who is secretly plotting her own literary takeover.
Carol Monda: An Audie-winner with a voice that can "resonate from the kaleidoscopic depths." She brings a grounded, sharp-edged gravity to Faye Wader, the "woman of a certain age" who is watching her legacy crack.
Joel Froomkin: A master of characterization and humor who can handle authentic American and British accents. He likely voices the agent, Hal Tinder, bringing that perfect mix of industry-standard charm and underlying panic.
Emily Lawrence: Rounds out the cast (likely as the editor, Merry Golden), adding to the multi-perspective "puzzle" where every character is hiding something from the others.
It’s a masterclass in "cringe-thriller" fiction. Laura Zigman manages to make a literal crime scene feel like a secondary inconvenience compared to the horror of a bad book review or a younger rival’s success. If you’ve ever wondered how far an "introvert" will go to save their reputation, this book provides a chillingly cynical answer: all the way.

“What wicked, brilliant fun! A blistering and sharply observed satire about the monstrous world of publishing, celebrity, and being a woman of a certain age. This is a novel that holds nothing back, and its bold, dark delights are utterly gripping and infectious: I couldn’t put it down.”
--Mona Awad, bestselling author of Bunny and Rouge
“The Author Weekend is everything I love in a novel. Brilliant, laugh-out-loud dialogue, unforgettable characters, and a rollicking, fabulously twisted plot. I thought it would be a perfect weekend read, but I greedily inhaled it in one sitting. What a gem!”
--Ann Leary, New York Times bestselling author of The Good House and The Foundling
“A rip-roaringly entertaining novel. It gets five giant stars from me.”
--Annabel Monaghan, New York Times bestselling author of It’s a Love Story
“Dark, hilarious, gripping, and insightful, The Author Weekend is a send-up of the publishing business written by someone who has seen it all—the good, the bad, and the very ugly. Zigman is a master of suspense. I couldn’t stop turning pages to see what would happen next, until I reached the story’s perfect conclusion.”
--J. Courtney Sullivan, New York Times bestselling author of Friends and Strangers
“The Author Weekend is so deliciously entertaining: a satire (is it though?) about writers and readers that takes place on Great Misery Island, features a hilarious invention called the Scream Muffler, and stars Faye Wader, the most narcissistically perfect author-zilla ever. Only Laura Zigman could turn the lowercase-d drama of publishing into an all-out thriller as bitingly resonant as it is absurdly funny.”
--Catherine Newman, New York Times bestselling author of Sandwich and Wreck
“The Author Weekend is as much a madcap romp through the world of publishing as it is a skewering of our culture that has made each character filled to the brim with anxiety, egoism, and insanity. Laura Zigman is wickedly funny and at the same time sympathetic to her people—a masterful balancing act.”
--Jane Hamilton, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Ruth and The Phoebe Variations
“The Author Weekend is about a mystery novelist who decides to host a fan weekend, à la [Elin Hilderbrand’s] Hilderbabes, only this weekend ends in a surprising number of murders. I laughed out loud at many of the ways Zigman probes all the insecurities and jealousies that (sob) even successful writers have.”
--Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author of All Adults Here and This Time Tomorrow
“A dark comedic thriller driven by envy, ego, and rage of a uniquely writerly variety…Zigman has about the most fun she’s had on the page since her breakout 1998 debut, Animal Husbandry. It’s a comeback for sure. A standout in the popular genre of literary-world satire.”
--Kirkus Reviews
“Macabre [and] perceptive metafiction…A consideration of the dark psychological fissures that surface when people’s loyalties are tested and their love is misdirected. Fascinating [and] entertaining.”
--Foreword Reviews
“In this sly closed-circle whodunit…Zigman delivers a fizzy combination of send-up and murder mystery. It’s good fun.” -
