HPR: I loved writing this!

Q. Name 1 to 5 insider things that readers may or may not know about your latest novel, your writing, or concept of Mother Daughter Sister Stranger!
HPR: As I was creating this story, I remembered how when I was growing up, my mother would read out loud to me. But I was always so frustrated when she said: “The End.” Because that couldn't be the end, could it? What happened after that and after that and after that? I have always been fascinated by what happened to the Narnia kids, what happened to Nancy Drew, and later, what happened to Nick Carraway and the Bennett sisters. How did their lives turn out after their books ended? Were the endings actually happy? SO I made the character of Eliza, who is a book agent for romance novels—because she knows she can rely on a happy ending.
I'm also fascinated by the author editor relationship. How the notes in the margins of a manuscript, the discussion between author and editor, can reveal the real story behind the story. More, I cannot say.

HPR: Oh, what a fabulous question.

~Edith Wharton—she is my hero for social consciousness, and dialogue, and incendiary motivations.

~Whoa. Edith would be annoyed, I know, but I’d tell the repair people they could take their time.

The 37 Emmys Room
Q. Hank, you have had an incredible 40+ year career as an on-air investigative reporter before dominating fiction. Where in your house do you keep all 37 of those Emmy awards? Are they all in one room, or scattered around like brilliant security guards?
HPR: Ha! They are all on my shelves, and you can see them in every zoom I do. Well, some of them at least. Some days when I am having a bad writing day, I look at those Emmys and think you know, those stories were difficult and challenging but I still persevered. And I can do that again with my books. Remember, every one of those Emmys represents a secret that someone didn't want me to tell! And that's exactly what I do in my novels, too.

Q. Your husband is a prominent civil rights and criminal defense attorney, and you write crime fiction. What do dinnertime conversations sound like at your house when you are both dissecting legal angles? I would love to be a fly on the wall.
HPR: Yes, we are quite the pair! He is working on a murder case right now, in fact, and we definitely spend some of our dinner time talk sharing ideas on trial strategy and jury selection and opening statements and closing arguments, and what each witness might say. I am the luckiest thriller writer in the world to have in-house counsel!

Q. Name 1 to 5 fun, surprising, or lesser-known facts about YOU, the author! Readers, this is a juicy one! 😀You can't make up stuff like this.
HPR: I worked as an editorial assistant at Rolling Stone magazine, and wrote a column about Washington DC politics called Capital Chatter. In that job, I went on tour with Hunter S. Thompson, and also with Richard Avedon, and had a nationally syndicated radio show called Rolling Stone Radio News. I was also a legislative aide in the US Senate, and worked on the Freedom of Information Act amendments.
Back in high school, a million years ago, all I wanted to do was be a majorette. I was so terrible at it that the band leader put me in the middle of the back row, and told me: just pretend to twirl. Sometimes I think that should be the title of my autobiography: “Pretending to Twirl.”

Q. How many books have you written, and (optional) a current project or upcoming?
HPR: I have 17 published novels! Can you believe it? (And none that are in a drawer unpublished. Amazing.) They are all thrillers, and I hope they are all page-turning, propulsive, and make you miss your stop on the subway.
And yes, I am three-quarters of the way through a first draft of book 18. I have been ordered not to reveal anything, but… I have a yellow sticky on my computer that says “remember, it's cold.” So there’s a clue for you.

Q. What is your favorite snack or beverage while plotting, and are you a morning or night person?
HPR:
~Night night night. I have writer friends who get up at the crack of dawn to work on their novels, and I am always in awe of that. If I got up at the crack of dawn to write, you'd find me asleep at my desk. It might be from my days covering true crime for television, where I have to be prepared to go on the air live at 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM--my writing metabolism really revs up as the day goes by. I am often writing after midnight.
~And I am a latte person, through and through.

HPR: Scuba diving. Forget about it.

HPR: My favorite vacation spot is Nevis, an island in the British Virgin Islands. It is remote and gorgeous and there is absolutely nothing to do. That's my favorite part of it. We sit on the gorgeous white sand of the expanse of empty beach, and watch the Pelicans skim across the Caribbean. Perfect.
