Kathleen Fox is an author who writes like she believes life is best lived — with a full tank, a slightly chaotic playlist, and unexpected detours. She is the author of Evie Walters Takes the Wheel, a spirited, character-driven novel about courage, reinvention, and what happens when you finally stop letting other people choose the route.
Fox’s writing blends humor and heart with a sharp eye for the small moments that change everything—a run in with a stranger, an unexpected invitation, a conversation that refuses to stay small. Her characters tend to be women standing at quiet crossroads who discover, often inconveniently and hilariously, that they are far more capable than they assumed.
Fox is a former teacher, school librarian, and corporate trainer. She developed games,children’s books, and music for the school library market, and founded a local art school in her community. She also helped co-founder a digital platform to help children elevate their innovative thinking.
When she isn’t writing, Fox can usually be found cruising around the country in her Sprinter van with her husband and two dogs. She’s navigated her van “Grey” through most of the continental US, the Canadian providences, and Alaska. She prefers rural towns and scenic routes. Kathleen Fox calls the coast of South Carolina home.

A. Most of EVIE was brainstormed and written while traveling in my camper van. I adore all the characters, but I’m overly fond of Veranece Ling who gives Evie Walters some powerful nuggets to take the wheel of her life. Mrs. Brown, Evie’s dog, was the name of my childhood neighbor’s pup. I’ve waited to use that name for over fifty years!
Q. You travel in a Sprinter van in real life. How many of your own road-trip mishaps made it into Evie’s story?
A. Most of them!

Fox structures the road trip beautifully—every stop feels purposeful, and the emotional payoff regarding the mystery sender of the orchid hits precisely the right notes without sliding into cheap sentimentality. It made me want to pack a bag, drop everything, and hit the highway
